Introduction into pilot region
Rolling hills, dark forests, colored meadows, beautiful houses and a well maintained cultural landscape - for many visitors this is the first impression of the region Muehlviertler Kernland. The region north of Linz is the Upper Austrian gateway to Czech Republic. Avaragly population density is 110 people per km2 (49.000 inh., 593 km2), while town like Freistadt, Wartberg, Pregarten, Hagenberg and Unterweitersdorf show higher amounts. Compared to other districts in Upper Austria the share of forests and agricultural land within Muehlviertler Kernland is much higher.
In 2007 Muehlviertler Kernland has applied for LEADER region. The action priorities are as follows: Energyvision 2020, New Life in old houses / on old squares, Tourism and leisure industry, Value added partnership – cooperation in agriculture and (small) business
Regional cooperation (Action research)
Within Austrian pilot region Muehlviertler Kernland regional landscape scenarios as well as landscape quality objectives has been elaborated resp. defined. In this context Institute of Spatial Planning and Rural Development supports a process based on Action research. With this approach scientists acitvely include member of the target groups (here: local people and regional interest groups) on their way to cognition. The commonly elaborated scenarios for landscape development will not only pay attention to a wider landscape definition but also deal with topics as demography, ressource potential and renewable energies.
In Muehlviertler Kernland there is the chance to summarize knowledge from projects on regional development and energy and to identify positive as well as negative influence on development of cultural landscape. In case of landscape changes there will be positve as well as negative influences on life quality. VITAL LANDSCAPES will serve as framework to commonly elaborate landscape development scenarios adequate to good life quality in the region also in future.
